WATCH D.O.G.S. (DADS OF GREAT STUDENTS)
**Please sign up at least 2 weeks before your volunteer date so that the school can coordinate with your student's teacher**
Who:
How does WATCH D.O.G.S. work?
Fathers and father figures can sign up to volunteer for the program through Boon's online calendar. The program is overseen by a "Top Dog", our school counselor, Ms. Wright, who partners with the school’s administration to coordinate scheduling and identify opportunities for Watch D.O.G.S. to provide assistance at the school. PTA is providing an online calendar for sign up.
What do Watch D.O.G.S. do while they are at school?
On the day of their participation at Boon, Watch D.O.G.S. arrive by 7:25 am and proceed to the reception desk at the front of the school where they are given a customized schedule for the day. During the day, Watch D.O.G.S perform a variety of tasks, including monitoring the school entrances, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, and helping in the classroom with a teacher’s guidance by working with small groups of students on various types of schoolwork. Watch D.O.G.S. also perform many other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well.
Will you really spend a full day at school?
Yes! WATCH D.O.G.S. has a great track record of bringing fathers and father figures to school for the whole day. While volunteering a day is a sacrifice, you can be sure that being a Hero of the Hallway more than makes up for it. In fact, in many cases, Watch D.O.G.S. volunteer more because they had an incredible experience and because it gives them a greater appreciation for what teachers are doing to educate their children.
Is there something special to wear?
You may choose to purchase a Watch D.O.G.S. t-shirt at https://dadsofgreatstudents.com/general.
If you do not have a Watch D.O.G.S. t-shirt a special vest will be provided to you.
Why:
Each school year thousands of men volunteer to work at least one day in their child’s school through the WATCH D.O.G.S. ® program. These men work along side the educators to help as crossing guards, car/bus rider facilitators, hallway monitors, library assistants, lunchroom helpers, classroom and homework tutors and playground/gymnasium coaches. The possibilities are endless. Every school year these men have a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of kids.
PROGRAM BENEFITS:
- Students gain a positive male role model. Some students do not have a father-figure present in their home and the number of male teachers has been steadily declining in recent years. More positive male role models are needed in the school setting.
- Schools gain an extra set of eyes and ears. The presence of Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) can increase a sense of security at the building for students and staff, and it helps create an environment conducive to learning.
- Fathers and father-figures can spend meaningful time with their students in the school setting and gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their student’s life, just by being a ‘dad’.
- When Watch D.O.G.S. invest a day at school, they can learn how better to partner with the school to meet educational goals of students.
